Campus Ratings Improve

LVISD is very pleased that all campuses have maintained or improved their accountability ratings for the 2009-2010 school year! The elementary school remains "exemplary," the intermediate school remains "academically acceptable," the junior high improves to "recognized," and the high school improves to "academically acceptable."  LVHS administrators challenged their students to improve the campus rating by making a promise to have a little fun on the first day of the 2010-2011 school year if they did.  Shown here are Mr. Chuck Long, LVHS Assistant Principal, and Mr. Sam Sexton, Principal. Mr. Long promised to shave his head if scores improved, and Mr. Sexton promised to grow his hair out.  Both kept their word, but the student body voted for Mr. Sexton to shave his head also!  Congratulations to all faculty, staff, and students for the hard work displayed this past year to improve the accountability ratings!

Balch Family Fund

La Vega ISD was very saddened to hear about the tragic accident involving our employee, Coach Eric Balch, and his sons, and will support Coach Balch and his family in any way possible during this difficult time.

The District has asked that the "Balch Family Fund" be set up at the Bellmead American Bank to help with upcoming expenses. A blood drive for Coach Balch was held on Tuesday, July 27th at La Vega High School with 65 pints donated in only a few hours.

The Pirate Crew Booster Club would like to thank all those who purchased meals at the fundraiser Friday night for Coach Balch and his family.  We are especially appreciative of the Glen Rose team and fans for their participation. We raised almost $2,000 for the family.  Thanks also to the La Vega Band Boosters and the La Vega Athletic Boosters for their support as well.  It's great to be part of the Pirate Family!

New Teachers Receive Funds

New teachers at LVISD are very fortunate to receive a $50 check to help with expenses in setting up their new classrooms.  The funds were donated by the Bellmead Lions Club, the Bellmead Chamber of Commerce, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas.  Shown here is Ms. Kristen Dutschmann, new third grade teacher at La Vega Elementary School, receiving her check from Rev. Duane Hoxworth, President of the Bellmead Chamber of Commerce.  LVISD would like to thank these entities for supporting our new teachers!

La Vega High School graduate DeChriston McKinney recently participated in the Texas High School Coaches All Star Basketball Game in San Antonio, one of only 24 players in the entire state of Texas selected to play in the annual event.  DeChriston represented La Vega ISD well and made the entire La Vega community extremely proud.  He is shown here with LVHS Basketball Coach Clay Cody.  Congratulations DeChriston!

LVHS Construction and Renovations Lead to Road Closure

La Vega High School is currently undergoing the first phase of construction additions and renovations as part of the bond package approved by voters in November 2009. Projects included in Phase 1 of this project include the addition of four science labs, two shared preparation rooms and multi-user restrooms.  Also, an expansion and renovation to the cafeteria and kitchen will add additional square footage allowing the kitchen to serve 900 students.  La Vega High School renovations will also include an expansion of the existing library to include a new space for computers and a more centrally located entrance.  The construction is scheduled to be complete in May 2011.  Because of construction at this campus, staff parking and student drop-off and pickup areas will have to be altered for the 2010-2011 school year.  There has been a driveway through the parking lot of the La Vega High School Football Stadium that provided access from Loop 340 to the Bellmead Civic Center.  Because of the increased use of the stadium parking lot during the construction and renovation process, this driveway creates a safety hazard for our staff, students, and parents.  Thefore, the LVISD Board of Trustees and Administration has agreed to close off the driveway.  The District is very excited about the new improved facilities at La Vega High School, and apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause the Bellmead Community.  The safety of our students, staff, and parents is of top priority.
